National election forecasters Inside Elections, Roll Call, Daily Kos, Governing, and Sabato all previously upgraded Sutton’s odds of winning South Dakota’s governor’s race.
Today, the Cook Political Report has taken notice of Sutton’s unique appeal and upgraded his chances for a November victory as well:
“Democrats nominated an appealing candidate in 34-year-old state Senate Minority Leader Billie Sutton. Sutton, who became a paraplegic after injuries suffered in a rodeo accident, is a moderate, which makes to (sic) hard for Democrats (sic) to morph him into a version of Hillary Clinton or Chuck Schumer. This remains a difficult race for Democrats, but Sutton is an appealing candidate who Noem and Republicans can’t take for granted.”
